David
Lynch
Lynch has gained the
reputation as one of the foremost auteurs in film due to his unique films and
style.
David Lynch is
an American filmmaker and director who had made several short films before
making his first major film being “EraserHead”, Lynch is most well-known for
his surreal visuals for example the ‘Black Lodge’ scenes in ‘Twin Peaks’.
In 1987 Lynch presented the ‘BBC Arena documentary in cinematic’
surrealism after the release of his film “Blue Velvet” in which he shows off a
range of surrealist films from famous artists such as ‘Man Ray’. Most of which
feature strange visuals such as in 'The Girl with the Pre-Fabricated Heart' which is about mannequins who are sometimes dismantled and other times dancing,
with this film Lynch connects the film to music videos, due to the videos being
made after the music to fit with the lyrics rather than making a song and
lyrics to try and fit with a video.
The films that are shown all feature
for their time new editing techniques such as stop motion, layering footage
onto of each other, fades, rotation and reversing footage pioneered by the film
‘Man with a Movie Camera’.
Lynch’s work inspires my project due to
the characters in his films and the bizarre events that happen to them and
their surroundings, having a narrative play out in some of my images is
something that I want to experiment with, I will attempt this by having a re-occurring
character show up in different pieces of my project. Another aspect of Lynch’s
work that inspires my project is the editing of his films and tv series which
at times can give the scene another worldly feel, with the ‘Black Lodge’ scenes
of Twin Peaks being an example such as the characters speaking backwards which
is then reversed giving their voices an alien characteristic.
