Reality and the role media has in society

Reality - The state of things as they actually exist, as opposed to an idealistic or notional idea of them. The state or quality of having existence or substance.

For my project one of the things that I want to experiment with and explore is the notion of reality and what is real and what isn’t. Books like ‘Cosmicomics’ and films like ‘The Matrix’ explore the concept of what is reality and what isn’t which will I will use as inspiration for this project.
For exploring the theme of reality, I want to create some sort films which link into the theme of existence, which could feature a drawn character slowing becoming a real person with the drawings becoming more detailed until they become a person.

I will also explore the role of media in society, how it is used and how it influences people, if there is a bias, does it try and make us think a certain way etc. This theme is explored in the film ‘They Live’ in which by putting on special pairs of sunglasses the main character discovers that the media isn’t all that it seems.

For this I will be looking at news programs, newspapers and news articles to see what they report on, how and what visuals they use alongside the report, and use my findings to influence my visuals.
